What Should I Wear to A Funeral?

Posted on June 18th, 2021

There are so many questions when it comes to funeral planning and over the years, we have been asked thousands of questions.  We are strong advocates that a funeral should reflect the person and we believe there are no rights and wrongs, but we thought we would address “dress code” as this is a popular question.

When it comes to funeral attire, for many of us we think of black and conservative clothing. Black clothing has been seen as an “appropriate” colour to wear to a funeral in the UK for a long time, with the origin of the tradition in Western cultures dating all the way back to ancient Rome.

The colour of clothing worn at funerals varies across cultures and religions with some favouring white, purple and red.  Whilst wearing black is still a common form of attire for funerals in the UK, people have started to move away from tradition, opting for clothing that suits their personal preferences or the requests of their past loved ones. Some request that none of the attendees at their funeral wear black, and that they opt for colourful clothing as a way to remember their loved one as they were – a bright person that brought happiness to those around them.

The answer to “what should I wear to a funeral” is not straightforward and we would encourage you to do what makes you comfortable whilst considering the wishes of the person you are remembering.  Whether that is wearing black, white, muted colours or a splash of a colour it is up to you!

At Freedom Funerals, one of our main priorities is that we are able to cater to a range of different funeral wishes, whether they involve unique personal preferences or are driven by your loved ones culture and/or religion. Our role is to support you through the planning of, during and aftermath of your funeral, making sure that each detail is how you wish it to be.
