Goodbye to an Extraordinary Man who lived an Extraordinary Life

Posted on April 10th, 2021

On Saturday, 17th April we say goodbye to an extraordinary man who lived an extraordinary life. Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh was not only HM The Queen’s husband for 73 years, but a father, grandfather, great grandfather, and the patriarchal head of “the firm”.

Plans for the Duke’s funeral, codenamed Forth Bridge, had been in place for many years and were often updated and reviewed by Buckingham Palace in consultation with the Queen and Prince Philip himself. As the longest-serving consort in British history, Prince Phillip was entitled to a State Funeral. However, with his no-nonsense approach to life, he left strict instructions for no fuss. Despite this, there would still have been thousands of people expected to gather in London and Windsor, with hundreds of members of the armed forces lining the streets to pay their respects.

With arrangements reviewed in line with the current Government guidelines, the funeral which takes place at St George’s Chapel, Windsor will be much more in keeping with his request. The Palace have said it will ‘reflect the duke’s wishes’ although it will still ‘celebrate and reflect’ a life of service.

Similarly, at Freedom Funerals we know that the loss of a loved one is an extremely hard event to go through, and we strive to make sure that their plans and wishes are met to the best of our abilities, whilst also ensuring that the event is safe for all attending during these times. Despite COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions, we will help you give them the send off that they deserve.

Buckingham Palace has requested members of the public to consider making a funeral donation to a charity of their choice rather than sending floral tributes. There is also an online Book of Condolence available for the public to post their personal tributes.

At Freedom Funerals our approach is to take into account the wishes of the individual as well as the bereaved. Please take time to discuss your funeral wishes with the family, or if you would like help in planning your funeral in advance, please give us a call on 01206 862 963. We would be very happy to discuss your personal funeral wishes. We are dedicated to meeting your needs and providing guidance and support to your family when needed.
